VLC for Android beta build has been released more than a year ago but for some reason, the developer never hint about rolling out the final version to the Play Store. Aside from that, the app has been reported to work flawlessly on numerous devices though some users do notify that they were getting typical “unsupported country” message during installation. Hit the source link after the break to get your free download right away.
Pretty much like its PC counterpart, VLC for Android is capable of playing any multimedia files you throw at it. It’s free and open-source as well, so if you have the time and the skill, you might want to help the maker with its development. Other slick features which are barely seen on similar apps are multi-track subtitle support and whole-library management tools.
As good as other beta apps, Android VLC still suffers from quite a few limitations like poor user interface and missing performance improvements. The most annoying one is probably the hardware decoding which is described to be compatible only with a number of devices.
On the good side of things, it’s still VLC; meaning, it plays anything regardless the format, can be accessed on the homescreen via a widget, and provides in-line audio controls for better entertainment experience with headsets.
Before you hit the download link, keep in mind that VLC for Android is still beta and the dev has clearly made it clear by saying “use it at your own risk!”. In fact, they even tell that it’s an app that only hackers and power users will find appealing. That said, you’d better check if your device is supported before making it your default multimedia player. Its official page has listed a number of supported devices, make sure you take a look.
By the way, some good guys at XDA managed to extract the APK and rewrite it so that it could run on greater range of handsets regardless their processors. Either way, if you have given it a shot, let us know what you think about it.
